When it comes to choosing shade to protect you from UV, there's more to it than meets the eye.

Even when we try and protect our self from the Sun's UV by sitting under shade it's not always a foolproof way of protecting your skin from sunburn. We get burnt in two ways. 1. Directly from the sun's radiation and 2. Indirectly via the reflection from the sun bouncing off reflective surfaces ie) sand, concrete and even in some cases Grass.

So basically when we sit underneath say an Umbrella or tarp it is still possible to get burnt by reflective indirect UV.

Shade is fantastic and much better then suffering sunburn from direct UV rays from the sun. However, some beach goers may still be surprised when they get home with a pink face or legs even after sitting under the shade of a tree, Tarp or Umbrella.

Even if you sit underneath a HUGE beach umbrella you are not 100% covered from the Sun's UV. In fact you are only 50% covered as you will still be effected by the indirect UV from the reflective surface of Sand and or Water. This means it is about as effective as a sunscreen with an SPF of 2.

If it is possible; try and place your umbrella under other shade like Trees, bushes, a building or anything else that is nearby. This will not only add extra protection from above but also shield you from any other reflective surfaces surrounding your beach position.

A better option to the Umbrella is the Beach tent. It has extra protection including three sides and a roof. It only exposes one side to the sand and water. BUT alot better then an open area surrounding a beach umbrella where you are exposed on all sides.

If you can see 360 degrees around you from sitting under your beach umbrella that means you will be exposed by all of that open space.

A city environment with many tall buildings cutting out most of the direct sunlight is ideal sun protection but gee who wants to spend their time in a concrete jungle?

The more shade available then obviously the better protected you will be. As long as you are not sitting right at the edge of the sunshade. Children and babies are much better being positioned within the center of the sunshade.

There are so many beach tents available on the market today. Just make sure they have a high UV filter and are big enough to protect your entire family from getting burnt.

WHAT ABOUT THE WHISTLE AND BINOCULARS AT THE BEACH?

When we think of going to the Beach we think of Sunscreen and Beach Towels. BUT what about these other items that you may have forgotten to pack for a safe and carefree Family day at the Beach.

JUG OF WATER OR BABY POWDER

To remove that unwanted Sand attached to limbs before you get into the car for the homeward bound trip. You could use that Jug of water in the back of the car OR Baby Powder. Using baby power is pretty effective and user friendly. Add powder and the sand just comes right off. Leaves your feet smelling fresher as well.

RADIO

Music is calming, relaxing and most of all adds to the memories of a special day out. Just be respectful of your beach neighbors and don't turn a Family day at the beach into a Beach Party with loud dance music. It's also beneficial to have a Radio on hand during storm season as a nice sunny day can turn nasty pretty quickly and it's great to keep up to date with the weather forecast.

CHAIRS

For those of us who like to be on the beach just not on the Sand. Easy to ensemble and get in and out of without trying to crawl around on the ground. Maybe im showing my age now but honestly it's alot easier and less sandy to sit on a beach chair then a towel.

FIRST AID KIT

When it comes to kids; its always helpful and sometimes essential to have a First Aid Kit on hand. You dont have to bring it with you to the Sand but always have it close by ie) in the car.

BINOCULARS

Whether you are looking for tidal shifts, rips, currents, whales or your kids. Binoculars are helpful for keeping an eye on current Ocean conditions as well as your children's whereabouts. Why do you think Surf Life Savers have them on hand all the time.

Lots of Water

The average adult drinks two litres of water per day. That amount is increased when we exercise or are out in the hot sun. Kids that run about in the warm weather will need more then average water consumption. So always make sure you have clean cool water on hand. Take a cooler with some ice in it to keep your water at a nice cool temperature. Nothing worse then Warm water on a hot day. Encourage the kids to drink more often and apply sunscreen each time they have a drink - at least every two hours.

WHISTLE

Not just for DOGS but you can train your children to come when you whistle. YES i know that sounds barbaric however it works. If you have a "secret Family "theme"" or Whistle you will stand out and the kids will think it's pretty special having a Family "secret" Call. Just remember not to overuse this Whistle technique otherwise not only will the kids start to ignore you but you may upset your neighbors.

Some more handy hints for a day at the beach:

Remember preparing your day is better then creating a disaster.

• The Beach Bag: this is an important element for carrying our much needed items to and from the beach. However the MESH bags are much better then the material one's as far as NOT trapping sand for your trip home.
• BUG SPRAY: Bug's dont just come out at Dawn and Dusk. They tend to make a real nuisance of themselves all throughout the day. Dont be a victim of their bites and stings. Remember to pack the Bug spray.
• KEYS: Make sure you lock them up in a water proof wallet or plastic envelope to prevent them getting WET or Sandy.
• TIDES: Remember to check your tidal times - you dont want to be sunbathing or playing near the rock pools when the tide comes in. Worse still cave exploring and not being able to get back out again safely. Being around the water can be dangerous so make sure you are prepared with your tidal chart.
• LIFE SAVERS: Try to find a beach that is patrolled. Life Guards are not babysitters so dont think that you can take your children to the beach and expect someone else to keep an eye on them. HOWEVER: in the event of an emergency they will be your "best friend" when it comes to saving your or your families life. Just remember to swim between the flags and always listen to what they tell you. Life Savers know the movement of the ocean and currents they will direct you (between the flags) to where you will be safe swimming with your family.
• RUBBISH BAGS: Don't forget to bring your own rubbish bags with you. We all know that plastic bags are not great for the environment however you can always use a reusable bag to store your rubbish in until you can get to a rubbish bin. Remember this is YOUR environment that you enjoy. Not picking up after yourself or worse still DUMPING your rubbish is a big no no and environmental hazard.
• LUNCH: When preparing a day at the beach sometimes its cheaper and easier to pack your picnic lunch then it is to find parking near the local take away store. SO that in mind; remember to pack your sandwiches and snacks in reusable containers that are sand and water proof. Pack them individually as little ones tend to drop things on the sand and then a tantrum soon follows. IF you have a back up sandwich, tantrums can be held back for another occasion.
• DUST BROOM: Invest in a good quality dusting broom for those last moment "dont get in the car with that sand all over you" dust off. You can remove all sand BEFORE getting into the car - trust me, it's easier to remove the sand at the beach then it is to get it out of your carpet and car seats later.
• MEDICATIONS: Including Asthma inhalers, headache pills and any other medications you may need for a day out. You do not want to be having an Asthma attack miles away from home or medical service. The Beach can be a remote place at times and you need to think ahead and become a little self sufficient.
